Our vision is to create community for the alpaca owner by inspiring, educating and providing a platform to share best practices.
Company Overview of Founders: Julie & Don Roy
In 2004 we reinvented ourselves by leaving the city (San Diego, CA) bought a home on 10 acres and started life in the country. Enter raising alpacas. After researching the business opportunities with this "loveable livestock" we converted 2.5 acres into Alpacas of Anza Valley and started with 4 pregnant huacaya females.
In the first year we grew to 12 alpacas, sheared their fleece, attended shows, won ribbons, had 2 babies (cria), started a boutique of yarn and accessories made from the fleece and got totally hooked on the alpaca lifestyle.
The second year we doubled the herd size when we added 8 suris and boarded them while the new owners were setting up their near-by farm. The third year we doubled again by adding more services of boarding - short and long term, breeding to outsiders with our new stud, "Dusty", assisting new owners start their alpaca herds and of course having more cria.
Over the course of 13 years we continued to grow our herd, gain recognition in the alpaca industry as raising show quality alpacas with 8 superb studs and birthed 150 cria. We consulted new owners and advised them about running a successful alpaca business with multiple revenue streams. We offered brokering services for buying and selling alpacas from coast to coast. Yearly we held Open Ranch Days at our ranch and at near-by Farmers Markets and Harvest Festivals. The Press loved us and frequently featured us in local and regional stories about our events. (It didn’t hurt to have angelic faces that loved to pose for the cameras and give nuzzles to visitors.)
As we gained experience we developed a following to our Alpaca Newsletters and online education courses. Julie frequently spoke to audiences about maximizing their yield of alpaca fiber from each shearing and ways to boost their business. She is the author of the popular e-book and educational series Alpacas Made Simple – A Beginners Guide.
Julie volunteered as a board member for seven years to the Alpaca Breeders of Southern California and was the event chair for the AlpacaFest West Show in March 2015. She is also a featured speaker for the Alpaca Owners Association National Fleece Conference for 2017.
Don is the webmaster for AlpacaEDU – Alpaca Online Education Courses. His experience as an engineer and the ranch manager at Alpacas of Anza Valley is invaluable to the new alpaca owners that desire to start off on the right track!
As the founders of AlpacaEDU our new vision is to provide reliable continuing education to the alpaca industry. The whole reason we created AlpacaEDU is because we were tired of hearing that alpaca owners were receiving conflicting information and not succeeding with their businesses. This platform aims to address that by providing solutions, helpful tips and advanced education from multiple breeders’ perspectives.
